Podejście tradycyjne Od wydania pierwszego patentu w 1886 roku cyklony były zasadniczo projektowane i usprawniane metodami empirycznymi. Opracowanie niezawodnej metody przewidywania wydajności jest bardzo trudne ze względu na złożoność modelowania, ponieważ te elementy wyposażenia przechodzą przez przepływy wielofazowe i bardzo turbulentne, a także z powodu ogromnej liczby prototypów, jakie należy skonstruować, aby potwierdzić efekt zmiany współczynników wymiarów na wydajność cyklonu. Faktem jest, że wydajność ogólnych cyklonów jest niedostateczna dla potrzeb klienta, zwłaszcza w przypadku cząstek o małych rozmiarach (<10 µm).
